Microsoft also includes a full working copy of Outlook in the package, for those without Microsoft Office. Even with some of the Treo's features ported over, Windows Mobile still can't match the one handed abilities and the simple elegance of the Palm PIM programs and general intuitiveness found in many Palm OS applications. That said, the Treo wx is a very powerful smartphone. I have to say its the best Pocket PC device that I've ever used to date.
Windows Mobile fans will find a lot to like with the Treo. Palm's customizations vastly improve the phone features and bring some cool and add some very useful functionality to Windows Mobile. The combination of a multi-tasking OS and a high speed data connection really let you tap into the power of mobile computing. PalmInfocenter is not responsible for them in any way. EV-DO is much faster on my wx than my p. For instance my wx averages speeds of kbps, sometimes it's well over One day I was shocked it was kbps.
My p is between kbps. Being able to surf the web, while writing an email, also sending out a text message, listening to XM radio, update my site, use StyleTap to run some of my favorite Palm OS apps, all at the same time with no slow downs is VERY nice: I can also stick in my sd wifi card and get even faster speeds:. Palm has added their special sauce to the wx and it shows. When I use my p and use blazer, then have to decide if I want to close blazer to open up chatter and send out a quick email, or text a friend, I forget that once I open chatter, or SMS, I've lost my place im Blazer the wx has spoiled me.
The wx lets me do so much more than I thought possible with a Treo, I'm still adjusting to Windows Mobile. You need to choose what device is best for you. As a long time proud Palm fan boy I am not embarassed to say that I've moved to the dark side, and it's pretty bright over here: I also feel lucky that I can also keep my p, I am getting the best of both worlds. If you're in the market for a Windows Mobile smartphone look no further than the wx, awseome smart device!
Also - Thanks for your comments. Very interesting. Or "what's my next appointment" and it tells you. I hadn't realized this was builtin, it's great for driving.
While I too get frustrated with Garnet's shortcomings, the ease-of-use PalmOS affords make it a joy just to fiddle with my Treo. I don't get that joy out of WinMob. Power's great, but user-friendliness will always deservedly remain supreme. Tim I apologise for any and all emoticons that appear in my posts. You may shoot them on sight. I just bought a wx, I was disappointed that it didn't have voice reco.
But you say "I used Voice Command for the first time tonight, it's so cool just being able to say "call so and so" and it does. I hadn't realized this was builtin, it's great for driving". I find the Voice Command in the User's Guide for shortcutting menu items How do I do this or find the way to do it. This will SO Help my driving if a woman's driving can be helped. I just bought a wx to replace a separate PDA.
I see that you got the wx to respond to "CALL x ". I cannot find that function I read the user guide kindof but didn't find it in there it talks about voicing commands for programs! I need to call people. After you press the small button you will hear a sound and a microphone icon wlll appear at the top of the screen to the right of where it says start.
Just speak into the phone and say "HELP".. After you get used to the system and how it works, you will no longer need to say "Help" I hope this is helpful! Inquiring minds wanna know if PALM "popped in another chip" or simply castrated the software they had to get the extra space.
RE: So They actually had success in putting a larger chip into the w but thus far cannot get WinMob to recognize it. So obviously an OS issue. Remember the TC video interview with the Treo 's product manager Not really. It can only be a hardware issue. Ivan RE: So My Verizon W was not reset, but as is the Storage on the left column reads: Total Any comments on this The w and wx both have identical amounts of storage memory, but the RAM used for active programs is 32 MB on the w versus 64 MB on the wx.
I know they are simillar but i was just wanted to know which would be more useful for a student. RE: what are the main differences between the p and the wx?
I find both equally easy to use and with some practice the Treo keyboards are usable, though not as roomy as the Sprint PPC or Cingular Though the PPC and 's keyboards may be better, with the Treo wx you need not slide out and rotate the device to begin typing. Like the Palm OS Treos, the wx has a slider switch up top to turn all sounds on or off the device will automatically vibrate rather than ring or sound an alarm when the slider is set to off.
On the left side you'll find the volume up and down buttons which control both system and ring volume when not in a call and call volume when in a call. Below these you'll find another application button which you can assign to whatever you like-- i. MS Voice Command or the camera. The user replaceable battery lives under a door on the back of the unit and the camera lens and self portrait mirror are on the back as well.
Call quality is excellent, even with 1 or 2 bars 4 bars are max on Windows Mobile and we prefer Sprint's incoming voice quality overall to Verizon. Voices are full and clear and volume is very good and louder than the GSM Treo Volume through the headset is very loud and will beat out midtown Manhattan traffic handily. Reception is average for a Sprint phone, managing similar signal strength to the Samsung a and BlackBerry e but not as strong as the Treo p. Web browsing and downloading email with attachments are a breeze on the wx, though our dsleports.
We'd generally expect closer to k on a weekend in our area, but tower congestion may be a factor. You are supposed to add on Sprint's PAM phone as modem plan if you wish to use the phone as a high speed wireless modem for a notebook.
Alas, x isn't supported by Windows Mobile 5 , so you will see less on screen compared to the Palm OS Treo and Treo p which run at x Will the lower resolution bother you? If you're a power user who needs to see the most on screen when browsing the web or viewing a spreadsheet, then yes.
If you love to play games not many support x , then yes. If you just want to use the phone lots, don't plan on adding lots of non- square resolution compliant software or playing games that don't support x , then the resolution should work fine for you.
Personally, I'm not bothered by the Treo's resolution except when web browsing; you just don't see much of a web page on screen at this resolution. Putting Internet Explorer Mobile into full screen mode which hides the top and bottom menu bars does help. The transflective display itself is bright and colorful and at 2. Though not as bright as the Treo p, it's certainly more than adequate and is quite viewable outdoors when viewing text and icons though the camera's full screen viewfinder does wash out when taking photos.
The display has virtually no color cast, unlike our Verizon Treo w which has a slight blue color cast. We believe that Palm uses several suppliers for their LCDs, so the variation may be due to that rather than differing product lines. Since the operating system supports both portrait and landscape orientations, you can flip the display to landscape but this is pointless given the square resolution and the keyboard being utterly out of place for landscape use.
The Treo wx's speaker has very ample volume. Alarms, ringtones and general audio out through the large rear-firing speaker will get your attention.
The speaker is located on the back so you're not accidentally deafened when an alarm goes off while you're holding the phone to your head in conversation. The speakerphone is very loud and clear as well. As with the Verizon Treo w whose results are nearly identical , the results aren't stunning for a file encoded at a fairly low bitrate but it manages just fine with videos under kbps.
Frame Rate: 24fps Orig. There's no nice way to say it; the camera generally takes dark and colorless photos. It's no worse than the Treo w but any Nokia, high end LG phone on Verizon and even some of the Samsungs take much better photos. One of the wx's neatest tricks is that you can use it as a modem to connect your laptop to the Internet from anywhere. Sprint's EV-DO network doesn't deliver the performance of desktop broadband service, but it's adequate for e-mail and browsing the Web.
The ability to make a USB connection from the Treo to the laptop rather than using Bluetooth helps performance some. Web browsing on the Treo, of course, is no better than it is on any other handheld device, but it's no worse, either. Applications designed for the small screen are OK -- and again, one advantage of the Windows Mobile OS is that it has all of.
Net behind it, and companies that want to build or migrate apps to mobile devices will like that. If you're more of a one-man army than a corporate soldier, you'll find that the larger number of applications available for Palm OS may make that device more attractive.
With all of these features, the Treo wx is not something you just pick up and start using. You'll be digging into the manual before you make your first phone call, and setting up all the features takes a significant investment of time.
But given the significant use you're likely to make of it, it's an investment that's well worth it. Here are the latest Insider stories.
