Inside the QuickTime Player resources in a file named "trampoline. The trampoline movie only contains an image file that says "Loading" and then it searches for the second online reference movie which then launches the current todays date content guide movie. If you are offline when you open QuickTime Player obviously the second two files can't be found so all you get is the trampoline movie. Other network errors can also cause issues. You can launch the Content Guide from the Window menu of QuickTime so turning it off at launch isn't such a big deal.
